So where are we today? At 75 years of age, am I in a wheel-chair dribbling into a cup, as could well be possible? Actually the opposite is the reality. I am fit and well, and my workload seems to be expanding exponentially.
In November 2002 a bush-fire destroyed the major part of the orchards, some 35 years of work, along with my original house.
The first two years following the fire were spent cleaning up the mess. With that primarily out of the way, the next twelve months or so saw my energies directed towards re-construction.
The re-furbishing of the accommodation units and re-planting of the orchard are now well under way. In excess of 60 trees have been planted, including custard apples, black, white and yellow sapotes, sapodillas, grumichamas, acerola berries, brazillian cherries, and strawberry, pineapple and Malay guavas, to mention a few.
My daily programme also includes 4 to 6 or more hours of hand-mowing or other physical work on the farm and several hours of emailing to address the various client queries.
On the professional side, I continue to practice at the farm, albeit with fewer clients, which benefits my well-being and gives me more time to care for the farm.
Last year I was appointed President of the Incorporated Society of Registered Naturopaths (ISRN) in the UK. And recently I was appointed President of the local community radio station, Cairns FM 89.1, that broadcasts 4 of my weekly programmes.
I also continue my annual round-the-world lecture tours, last year visiting the island of Labuan, Malaysia, Slovenia, Edinburgh and York in the UK, and New York, West Palm Beach, Houston, and Hot Springs in the USA. In 2007 I plan to include Thailand, Germany, and Cuba in my itinerary, and may include Greece, having just received a tentative enquiry to speak at a conference there.
